How to Clean Roller Shutters

There are many different methods when it comes to cleaning roller shutter models. All of these have different methods for cleaning, and some can be a little hazardous if you do not know what you are doing. The safest method is to leave them alone so that they do their job properly. Cleaning them on your own will save you the trouble of removing them once you are done and your windows look as good as they did before. Most homeowners do not put forth the effort needed to keep their flotsam clean. They allow dirt and grime to build up and cause the roller shutters to clog. One way to prevent this is to clean them on a regular basis. A great trick is to use a mild detergent, such as a kitchen or bathroom cleaner. These cleansers will not damage your roller shutters nor will they damage the paint.

For mild detergents, take a soft cloth and dip it in a mild detergent. Work the cloth gently through the slats. Do this until you see no more dirt. Then take your soft cloth and dip it again in the detergent and wipe down all of the slats. Do not rinse the cloth out. Continue down the shutters washing each slat one at a time until they are clean.

Let the cleaner sit for five minutes before you wipe it down. Dry the shutters by wiping with another clean and dry soft cloth.

Once you have cleaned all the dirt and grime, pull the vinyl sashes back up. Use a clean towel or soft cloth to dry them. They will be very warm, so you want to take care of them and make sure they are as clean and dry as possible before opening them. With your dry cloth, apply a coat of mild detergent and then rinse the shutters off completely. You may want to repeat this process until you are left with just the dust residue left behind from cleaning.

Now that your roller shutter is clean, you can apply a coat of polyurethane on the entire shutter if it is not already done. Polyurethane protects the vinyl from the elements while also making it easy to clean. If you are still worried about getting oil on your vinyl sashes, you can always have a professional window cleaner do the job.

Once you have your window shutters clean and dried, you can then begin cleaning your roller shutters. Begin by removing any wax or varnish that may be on the slats. To remove wax easily, a regular window cleaner may do the trick. For stubborn stains, try using the same cleanser. When scrubbing, make sure you gently alternate strokes to prevent scratching the slats.

With your clean window shutters, you can now begin polishing your wooden shutters. Polishing your wooden shutters will keep them looking brand new. Before applying the polish, you will need to wipe down your roller shutters with a clean damp cloth to get all the dirt and debris off them. Once you have all the dirt removed, you can then apply the polish in three even coats to create a shine.

After applying the polish, allow it time to dry completely. For a complete cleaning, you should allow the shutters to dry overnight. Once they have dried thoroughly, you will then be able to enjoy all the wonderful benefits of having clean and polished roller shutters installed in your home.
